Great Feature 1: Spaces
There are two features that I have started using on a more frequent basis. The first is School AI's all-powerful spaces. Spaces are AI-powered assistants tailored to a variety of different concepts. Imagine allowing your students to have a conversation with Leslie Knope about public policy, or with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. about the fight for civil rights. Teaching a world language? Have your students instantly travel to an international food market where they have to communicate in the native language. Literature? Explore classics like 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Holes or the Scarlet Letter. There are a growing number of specialized spaces each week!
Are you like me, and you have a class which has 1/2 of your students who need remediation and 1/2 are ready to move on? These spaces have been perfect conversational challenges for my students who are ahead, and some extra confidence for my students who are working towards mastery. Using the spaces has allowed me to move around the room and chat with students based on their interactions with the AI. While a space is in session you get feedback which looks like this:
I can click on any of the students names on the left side, and it takes me into their conversation with the AI Assistant, and I can look at the depth of their examples. On the right side, it gives a running breakdown of what the class has in terms of either highlights or lowlights. As I am beginning to transition my classes to use the Teach Better-Grid Method, I can use a School AI space to probe the depth of student understanding, and use their conversation as the basis for a conference on their progress!
Are you afraid that you didn't see something within your content area shared in the list of spaces? You can create your own space for students to discuss in less than a minute! Check out this helpful Tango step-by-step guide to build your own space!
Great Feature #2: Assistants
Sometimes I feel a bit like I'm teaching on my island. While my department has several other social sciences teachers, I am the only one teaching the AP Government and Economics courses. So, while I have other colleagues who are familiar with the content, they are not or maybe have never actively taught the courses, so collaboration can be a bit of a challenge. However, lonely prep no more! Here is the current list of Assistants SchoolAI has available:
Now, at the tips of your fingers, you have a variety of different assistants to help you explore specific tasks in your classes or offer a second opinion on something! If you want more information on why I love the assistants, you can check out Episode 4 of my podcast!
